Three Chimneys
Three Chimneys, located on the edge of the quaint village of Nellysford, is among one of the oldest homes in scenic Nelson County. While the exact date of its construction is not known, records indicate that it was sometime between 1750 & 1770. It is believed to be the home of Samuel Woods, one of the early pioneers of the Rockfish Valley area of Nelson County. Three Chimneys was designed as an "ordinary" providing meals and lodging to the travelers passing through the valley.
The home was constructed from bricks made on site as well as from first growth trees which were hewned and made into rafters and floor joists. The home was built in the Flemish bond style with six fireplaces. The chimney on the north side of the house was built inside, which is very unusual for homes of this period. What today is the rear of the house, was originally the front and faced the old road which ran between the house and the Rockfish River.
